When you first got your dog, you were thinking of the friendly companion he or she would make. You were not thinking of the barking, chewing, slobbering, jumping, aggressive pup you took home with you. Those are just a few of the issues that can make dog ownership a chore and dog training courses a requirement.

My friends are dealing with their puppies complete lack of understanding about not jumping in their laps and lying on the couch. Most problems with dog behavior is not about the dog. Outdoor weather is an Akitas best friend.  However, long periods of time outside isn’t a good idea.  The double thick coat Akitas have is certainly a limiting factor in being outside in warmer weather.  Cooler temperatures is a big plus for your dog.  Extreme weather doesn’t work well either for these dogs, so get them inside during rainstorms or other bad weather.

Early Akita puppy training is another important part of the care and feeding of Akita puppies.  As a pack animal, Akitas want to be the leader of their pack.  You’ll need to provide that training to take control of your own pack.  Leash training began at puppy time will pay off in big dividends when your puppy becomes an adult.  Another important early training idea is to expose your Akita puppy to other dogs and strangers.  This socialization process will help you avoid problems down line.  Akitas have a natural desire to protect and guard.  Getting them started with other situations will help you hold this sometimes negative behavior in check.

Akitas are sensitive animals.  That might be a bit hard to believe, given the size of the adult dog.  Lots of love and attention are very important to Akitas good health.  Give them exercise, fresh air, and love, and you’ll have a happy healthy companion for a long time.

While we don’t sell Akitas, a lot of people do.  Akita puppies for sale is one of the highest searched terms on Google among pet lovers.  Its clear people want these dogs.  The new Richard Gere movie will add to this fervor I’m sure.  The biggest caution here is make sure you get your Akita from a reputable breeder.  If you’ve read this site before, or you are a fan of Akita, you know the American Kennel Club has only recognized the breed since 1972.  That’s a short time, even in dog years.

Your cost for an Akita puppy from a reputable breeder will run $750 to $2000.  Show dogs will be higher, of course.  Never buy an Akita at a pet store.  No matter what you hear, pet stores are not a good source of purebred dogs, particularly Akitas.  Since you’ve done your research, you know that furry, playful puppy, will grow into a full size 125 pound powerhouse of a dog.  Akitas are great guard dogs and their loyalty is the subject of not only legend, but Hollywood movies.

Letting your Akita puppy know who is boss is an unrelenting job that begins on day one at home.  Taking a little time up front to “puppy-proof” your home is probably not a bad idea.  Look for things that can be chewed or destroyed.  Chances are good if they are left out, your Akita puppy will find them.

Akitas love being the only pet in the house.  Its part of their territorial makeup that makes them the loyal guard dog that they are.  By nature, they will take over and dominate smaller animals.  Keep that in mind when you bring your Akita puppy home.

All in all, Akitas are loving, sensitive, and loyal dogs.  They are a member of your family (just don’t give them a place at the dining room table.) They will be by your side regularly.  Akita puppies are great dogs.  Take care to shower them with the love and attention they bring you for a very happy time.

DELHI, California — A 17-month-old boy was fatally attacked by his baby sitter’s pit bull Friday morning.  The babysitter told police her pit bull and Akita mixed-breed dog attacked the child, biting its throat and dragging him around the yard. The boy was mauled by the 65-pound pit bull. The baby sitter called 911, screaming hysterically, and then the line went dead. She was able to get the child away from the dog after stabbing it with a fork several times. The woman called 911, but hung up and headed to the hospital with the child.

Pit bulls are notorious for bad behavior.  Mix that with the size and power of Akita and an untrained animal, and you get disaster.

Athens, Georgia — Jack Huff gets a stack of complaints every day from Madison County residents who have animal problems.  The requests may be as simple as picking up a feral cat or as tragic as a dog attack, he says. But, as the county’s only animal control officer, he handles them all.  Huff doesn’t believe that he or a larger animal control team could prevent the worst maulings – like the 5-year-old boy who got attacked by an 86-pound Akita on Oct. 16 in Hull, or Lothar and Sherry Allen Schweder who were killed Aug. 14 by a pack of feral dogs in Oglethorpe County.

Feral dogs.  Untrained animals.  There were 43 recorded dog attacks or bites on humans in Madison County, Georgia in 2009 alone.  While we can’t prevent all these attacks, we can control what is under our control.

Just the opposite of what you want to accomplish.  Remember as a kid when your mom would be looking for you.  Mine always called my full name.  First, middle, and last names.  Loudly.  I knew I was in trouble.  Your dog behaves the same way.  The word “COME HERE” to a dog without proper training is really telling them the opposite.  It’s not the dog’s fault.  It’s our as the owners for not having the proper information.

Here’s a short list of ten commands and their meanings for your dog.

• Calling the dog’s name is an informal recall.
• “Good” is a conditioned reward for your dog.  It’s to reinforce behavior you want.
• “No” is just the opposite of good.
• “Off” is used to teach your dog to not touch an item with mouth or paws.
• “Heel” tells the dog to walk next to you.
• “Take It” gives permission to take food or a toy.
• “Sit” pretty obvious.
• “Down” to lay down.
• “Wait” is a softer version of “Stay” don’t leave your place until another command is given.
• “Back” to get back out or in the door.

Here’s another “training behavior” I’ve seen done–that doesn’t work.  Ever see someone rub their dog’s nose in an “accident” in the house.  I have.  Doesn’t work. This will even frustrate the dog and make house breaking more difficult for you.  Have you ever worried about your Akita puppy dashing out the front door of the house?  This is another one of the behaviors you can whip with proper dog training.

I have a friend who has taken her dog to “obedience school” several times.  Observing her, the dog isn’t the problem.  It’s the owner, who allows the dog to “get away” with poor behavior.  Jumping on people, begging for food, etc.  It can be a problem with a normal sized dog.  With Akitas reaching nearly 120 pounds of powerful muscle, it can be disastrous.

Start your training program from the moment you get your Akita puppy. Learning who runs the house is vitally important with Akitas.  They are not pack animals by nature, and are used to being the Alpha in any home.  Time spent early with proper training, will save you lots of king sized headaches along the way.

Get all the training information you need.  I’ve reviewed a number of training manuals.  There are links on the site to the best quality information you can get.  You can pay for a dog trainer and still not understand what’s being taught your Akita puppy.  Or you can go to school at the same time, and be a responsible pet owner.
